Real change is practically invisible

This quote really struck me this morning while listening to the brilliant Chris Evans on the Virgin Radio breakfast show. He’s so wise and has great insight, definitely worth a listen - I guess it’s a byproduct of still being brilliantly relevant after decades of working in the media. Plus it’s like a coaching session every morning! Love him 😍

Anyway, what I wanted to say is that I sometimes get stuck on not being able to notice the changes I’ve made over the last few years. I was having a real ‘fear’ wobble last week. I guess a combination of hormones and frustration about being self-employed and not having a team to bounce ideas off. I was having a real ‘feel sorry for myself’ day but fortunately I now have more self-awareness to take a step back and recognise what was going on.

I made myself look back at what I’ve achieved and how I’ve changed my mindset over the past few years. Each course I’ve completed, each book I’ve read, each person I’ve met, the habits I’ve formed, the clients I’ve helped and the thoughts I’ve changed - all these have accumulated and I looked back and thought, ok I have actually done something here. None of this was achieved quickly or overnight. The process is still teaching me and who knows where the end point is?

My point is, if you’re having a ‘feel sorry for yourself moment’ (which we all do), look back over the past year and write down ten things you’ve learnt, changed or progressed with. It’s so profound and you’ll be amazed at your own abilities. Once you’ve done this, give yourself a virtual pat on the back and keep on going because what else can we do?! Enjoy the process, see where it takes you and don’t forget to acknowledge those small changes and progress you’ve made.
